FALMOUTH

Corkellis, Falmouth

A Scandinavian-inspired eco self-build by interior designer Kathryn Tyler that was featured on Grand Designs. Iron Orchid collaborated with Kathryn on the garden design; landscaping and planting the steep sloping site in Falmouth, Cornwall.

Brief:

Create an outdoor space combining lush coastal planting and simple materials to complement Kathryn’s pared down, contemporary architectural vision.

Challenges:

A project that was a pleasure to work on from beginning to end. The creative inspiration and eco friendly vision combined with the wonderful backdrop of Kathryn’s self build home made this a dream scheme. The only real challenge was the steep hillside plot that made it tricky for machinery – but nothing that couldn’t be overcome.

Solution:

Sub tropical planting in geometric plant beds topped with slate chippings. Simplicity of lines were key in mirroring Kathryn’s modernist inspirations. Statement plants were introduced to give structure whilst an understated plant palette of lush green foliage, white and silver underpinned the unfussy, subtle aesthetic.

Outcome:

The bright, light garden suits the building perfectly. As the plants have matured the structural simplicity of this outside space has softened at the edges without losing the geometric subtly of Kathryn’s Scandinavian vision.
