TRENOW COTTAGE, PERRANUTHNOE

The building here was most likely a workshop for the nearby tin mines which operated over a century ago along this stretch of the south coast of Cornwall. A residence for many years, it undertook a major renovation at the same time we were asked to design and build the grounds. Looking out over St Michael’s Mount and towards Penwith, the west facing garden pitches over the fragile low cliff onto the rocky beach below. Although exposed – Atlantic gales hammer this place in the winter – its overall climate is mild. Matched with a beautiful, light, free draining soil, the conditions allow a paradise of potential with the planting. The only drawbacks here are the harsh salt winds and rabbits!

Brief:

We were given a generous carte blanche by the owners, who have a growing young family and pets. Outside eating space, sun worshipping, children’s play areas and privacy made up the needs of the family.

Solution:

The design we created has a relaxed, beach-side vibe with intimate social spaces to provide shelter and contrast the wide open vistas. A gravel drive curves up to the house past wildflower banks and a sloping lawn edged with full borders. The secluded fire pit area looks out over the water for quiet time away from the house. Hard landscaping materials reference a maritime aesthetic with rusted metal fixings and old, salt soaked timbers lining the way to the front door. Oak sleepers, bedded in fine gravel, support sprawling, salt tolerant planting of succulents and nectar rich perennials and shrubs such as Echium and Ceanothus. Another timber feature is incorporated in a courtyard pebble spiral and to the side, a large slate terrace for outdoor dining. On the far side of the house a custom built tree house with play equipment occupies the children.

Outcome:

A garden that is getting ever better as it matures, outstripping all our expectations. The planting has softened the initial hard edges of the landscaping, the natural rhythm of the garden’s spaces and vistas working in harmony. Locally sourced and reclaimed materials along with the coastal planting blends beautifully with the stunning backdrop. A seamless transition between garden and view.
